There is a very popular notion that Christmas began in Rome as a response to pagan festivities centering around the winter solstice, which was locally considered to be 25 December. The pagan celebration, which was first established by the Roman emperor Aurelian in AD 274, was called The Birth of the Invincible Sun. The Scandinavian Norse also celebrated the Yule festival with the burning of Yule log during this time.

The Protestant Christans legally banned Christmas for its non-Christan origin. The Christ's Mass, Christmas trees, Santa Claus and the Nativity scene are all of pagan origins. All these lead to the same question Is Christmas A Pagan Holiday? Saint Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in Lycia. He was associated with kindness to children. The Dutch custom of giving presents to children was brought to America by early Dutch settlers. The present day Christmas tree also goes back to the worship of sacred trees by various religions. The Druids worshipped the oak tree, the Egyptians worshipped the palm tree and while in Rome it was the fir tree.

The controversial question Is Christmas A Pagan Holiday or not has not reached a definite solution even today. What we ought to do is to regard our early Christian heritage and celebrate Christmas, taking all good things from our early traditions without being too orthodox.
