To trace the history behind the Father Christmas Picture is an interesting endeavour. Father Christmas or whom we very dearly refer as Santa Claus is the most popular icon of Christmas and we all know him as the of the rosy-cheeked portly man in his plush red furry overcoat, ringing his bells and dashing across the snow in his sledge, distributing gifts to children on the Christmas Eve.
This picture, however, has come to us through various modifications and alterations over the years. Here is Christmas Carnivals with information on the Father Christmas Picture.
The very first description of Father Christmas as the chubby old man, with rosy cheeks, wearing a furry overcoat and hat was found in a poem by Clement Moore. Robert Weir, the art teacher, was inspired by th4e description and he painted the first portrait of Santa Claus in 1837. He made Santa wear a short suit and a stocking hat as he puffs at his long clay pipe. Finally it was in 1863, that we get to see Santa more as a real person through the Picture drawn by Thomas Nast. The most common Santa Claus picture that we find on cards and greetings these days are those which portray the old stout man in his long and sometimes short suit, which are invariably made of red velvet, with a white furry border, sometimes with a dash of green. The hat that he wears also matches his apparel, but it may be the stocking hats or the simple ones. Besides this we also get several Picture showing Santa in action. Through his pictures of Santa’s world, for the first time we got a glimpse of the old man’s magical world- his ginger bread house, his factory at the North Pole where his elves make toys for kids and his room, where he reads the list of wishes sitting by the fireplace.
