American Independence Day

The 4th of July 1776 changed the course of American history. It was on this day when the Declaration of Independence was signed by the Continental Congress. In those days the United States was but a group of 13 colonies, ruled by King George III of England. The root of unrest lay in the fact that the locals were made to pay taxes to the English government. The people wanted representation in the English Parliament. This is when the ‘Taxation without Representation’ movement was at its peak.

The colonies war for independence ended in 1776. America celebrated its first official independence day on July 4th 1777.

Over the years America devised ways and means of celebrating this day. Parades, community functions, picnics, music concerts and other such events are organised to commemorate the ethos the ‘Declaration of Independence’ stands for.
