The epithet "blessed" is used to refer to Mother Mary because she is the God's chosen one, whom He had given the honor of being the Mother of his Son, Jesus. In the Gospel of John it is mentioned that while on the cross, Jesus asks his disciple to behold his mother, by which he actually referred to his mother Mary and at that very instant he transformed Mary to the universal Madonna, the Blessed Mother Mary of all the disciples and followers of Jesus.
If we consider the circumstances of Christ's birth, it will be further apparent why we consider Mary to be the blessed Mother. From the New Testament we gather that Mary was betrothed to Saint Joseph, and according to the Gospel of Luke, was a virgin at the time when she learned from Angel Gabriel that she is going to conceive the Holy Son of God, Jesus, through the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of Luke further informs that in order to fulfil the decree of Emperor Augustus, Mary and Joseph were on their way to Bethlehem for an enrolment when Mary gave birth to Jesus. Since there was no place available in the inn, our Holy Father took birth in a manger.
