Mary Mother of God |
|
Mary Mother of God is an address that has faced criticisms over the years, especially from the Catholic Christians. The basic of their argument rests on the fact whether Jesus can be regarded as God himself or the Son of God. Mary fulfilled all criteria for being called Jesus' mother: she not only
and enjoys equal divine status by her own right. Many are of the opinion that Mother Mary was herself God sent and that explains why she is designated as Virgin Mary. Mother Mary carried him in her womb, but it was also through her and not Joseph that Jesus "was descended from David according to the flesh" (Rom. 1:3).
About Mary Mother Of God
According to the Christian belief Jesus is the Son of God and can also be called the God, as he is the second person of the Holy Trinity, besides, the Father and the Holy Spirit. Following this logic we may say that Mary is the Mother of God. The fundamentalists argue by saying that although Mary is the mother, she cannot be regarded as the Mother of God as she is neither older than God nor is the source of her Son's divinity. In order to emphasize their point they also assert that Mary did not carry Jesus or the Son of God in his womb, but merely his human form. This, however, opens ground for another argument based on the 5th century heresy known as Nestorianism. According to Nestorianism a mother besides carrying the human nature of the child also carries its person. So following this line of thought we can say that Mary is rightfully the mother of God for she gave birth to the person of Jesus Christ and therefore gave birth to God. If we contest on considering Mary to be the mother of God we are actually disrespecting Jesus and denying the fact that he was God too.
