Mother Mary of Jesus |
|
Mother Mary of Jesus is probably the most potent icon of Christianity, after Jesus himself. The New Testament refers to Mary as the mother of Jesus of Nazareth. Mary was betrothed to Saint Joseph and according to the Gospel of Luke was a virgin at the time when she learned from Angel Gabriel that she is going to conceive the Holy Son of God, Jesus, through the Holy Spirit.
From the non-canonical works we get to know about Mary's parentage. Saint Joachim and Saint Anne are the supposed father and mother of the Virgin Mother Mary of Jesus and are therefore referred to as the "forebearers of God."
The New Testament, however, does not give us any information on Mary's parentage , except the fact that she used to stay in Nazareth in Galilee. The story of her becoming the mother of Jesus is probably the most interesting chapter in The Bible. It was during the first stage of her Jewish marriage to Joseph, Angel Gabriel declared that she was to become the mother of the Messiah. Joseph on hearing of this prophesy was taken by surprise, but he did formally complete the wedding rites and accepted Mary as his wife. The Gospel of Luke further notifies that in order to fulfil the decree of Emperor Augustus for Mary and Joseph were on their way to Bethlehem for an enrolment when Mary gave birth to Jesus. Since there was no place available in the inn, our Holy Father took birth in a manger.
Mother Mary of Jesus is highly revered in both the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Church and the study of Mother Mary is referred to as "Mariology". Know more about Mother Mary by browsing through the site and celebrate this Christmas with
