The religious festival of St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated with joy and merriment in Ireland and many other countries in the world. The 17th of March is observed as the St. Patrick’s Day. The day is marked with various events, parades, music, songs and the color green. Various symbols are associated with this day.
St. Patrick’s Day Symbols
These symbols include the Sharmock, Leprechauns, The Color Green, The Harp, The Celtic Cross and The Blarney Stone. The implications of these symbols are described below.
Sharmock
This is a traditional symbol of this special day. Different kinds of three-leafed clovers in Ireland are commonly known as Sharmock. This has been chosen as the national emblem of the country.
Leprechauns
This has its origin in the Irish word ‘luchorpan’. This means ‘little body’. Leprechauns looks like a merely two feet tall old man. He dresses like a shoemaker. He wears a leather apron and a crooked hat.
Color Green
Green has been the symbol of Ireland since the nineteenth century. The country observes plenty of rains and mist. In fact the ‘Emerald Isle’ remains green all round the year. Perhaps, this green landscape was the reason behind choosing green as the national color of the country. Wearing green colored dresses in the country is considered as paying tribute to it. The common belief is that this particular color brings in good luck. The green colored dresses are passionately worn on the St. Patrick’s Day.

Saint Patrick is responsible for combining the traditional Irish beliefs with Christianity. One good example of this amalgamation is the Celtic Cross. This is the combination of traditional Irish sign of sun with Christian cross. This has become a powerful Irish symbol since then.
The Blarney Stone
The magical Blarney Stone is situated in the Blarney Castle Tower in the Irish village of Blarney. If one touches this stone, he or she is blessed with the gift of the gab. This is a potent Irish symbol.
