The Three Wise Men were the three men who came from the east in order to visit Lord Jesus in the manger. According to Isaiah the three men were named as Balthazar, Caspar (or Gaspar) and Melchior. They were of noble birth, educated, wealthy, and influential. These men were philosophers, counselors of the realm, and rich in knowledge about the ancient east. The Feast of Epiphany, celebrated on sixth January, commemorates the visit of the three wise men.
The Gospel of Matthew narrates the story of the Magi or the three wise men. It is said that they arrived at Bethlehem by observing a specific star in the night sky. This guiding star is known as the Star of Bethlehem. Incidentally, they first went to King Herod's palace and enquired about the birth of the young Messiah (Savior). The deceitful Herod at once became worried about being dethroned. He directed the three wise men to continue their journey and to inform him if they could trace the birth of such a young king.
The Star of Bethlehem directed the Magi to the manger of baby Jesus. They offered their gifts and paid homage to their Lord. But the Magi didn't inform Herod as they had a received a divine warning about King Herod's evil intentions. The three gifts offered by the three wise men were gold, frankincense and myrrh. In the story about the visit of the Three Wise Men Lord Jesus is referred to as King to the Gentiles.
