The Easter Island is one of the most well-known and isolated places. The people who began settling here called the island "Te Pito O Te Henua" which means Navel of the World. In the year 1722 Admiral Roggeveen visited the Island on Easter and gave it the name Easter Island. The island today along with its inhabitants and language are commonly called Rapa Nui by the local people.
Situated about 2000 miles from the distant Tahiti and Chile is the Easter Island. It is one of the most secluded places with a triangle of volcanic rock located in the South Pacific the Easter Island is well known for massive stone monoliths that are commonly called as Moai and that are very close to the coastline. The Easter Island has various stories and legends associated with it. There are various facts of the Easter Island that are very interesting to know.
- Jakob Roggeven who was a Dutch navigator gave the name Easter Island to the unknown island in the year 1722.
- The Easter Island is most commonly known for its massive statues or monoliths that are called Moai. These statues are 10 to 40 feet high and some of them even weigh 50 tons.
- The Easter Island is one of the most secluded places and is named so as it was discovered on Easter. The island is small and rather unknown.
- Since the year 1888 the Easter Island has been presided over by Chile. It is believed that the Polynesians discovered the Island.
- The island has an open-air museum for its visitors to come and see the ancient culture that is eminent in this incredible island.
