Christmas Church Plays |
Every year, children and adults all over begin preparing Christmas plays for church during the late Fall months. Once intended for the edification of the audience as a means to visually present the story of Jesus’ birth, these theatrical productions are now firmly established as part of holiday tradition. Depending on the size of the church, you might have a cast of several dozen (and maybe some animals) or just three or four actors. No matter which direction you choose to go, many will be touched by the lessons they encounter during the performance.
Voices of The Living Nativity
A favorite for many churches, this can be performed indoors or outdoors and involves actors performing as angels, shepherds, the Wise Men and, of course, the Holy Family. There are a variety of options for the play: you might include choral performances, for example. The idea is to deliver the message in a manner befitting the surroundings – if your drama is taking place outdoors on a cold evening, you’ll want to keep it short, obviously.
A Heartfelt Christmas
Following the story of a young child that’s lost her hamsters, this classic demonstrates the nature of God’s heart toward his children in a unique way. As the story concludes, the love of the Father becomes obvious as he sends the Son to liberate humanity.
Song of Mary
Designed as an “inside story” from the perspective of Jesus’ mother, we are invited to watch as she describes the events to Luke. Based on the most extensive retelling of the Nativity, this play gives the gospel a genuine feel by describing the tension surrounding the birth.
Three Shopping Days Till Christmas
A refreshing take on the commercialism that has taken hold of the Christmas season, viewers are taken through a modern concept of the ancient story. As the scenes wind down, we come face to face with the central focus of the holiday – one that has been pushed further and further into the background as department stores and retail chains became more invested in advertising the newest toys.
When Worlds Collide
Combining the feel of a black-and-white detective movie with the events of Jesus’ birth, this is a unique way to help people grasp the larger picture of the Nativity. Telling the tale of a private investigator hired to find out where the Wise Men went, we follow the central character as he follows the clues and discovers the magnitude of what has happened.
