Santa Claus Reindeer |
Santa Claus Reindeer is a team of flying reindeer that carry him from the far off north. The names of Santa Claus Reindeer are taken from Clement Clarke Moor's 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas. Originally there were eight Santa Claus reindeer namely Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen.
Over time, two more reindeer have been added: Rudolph and Robbie, the former a well known name due to the popular Christmas song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the latter a media character.
The American version of St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus originally came from the Dutch version called Sinter Klaus. The Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam brought this fun and lively tradition to America. A merry old man with red and white clothes with eight flying reindeer brought gifts for good children. According to Moore's poem, Santa Claus Reindeer are more rapid than eagles.
Among Santa Claus Reindeers, Dasher is the speediest one. He is the first reindeer to lead the Santa's sleigh. Dancer the second reindeer is a graceful female reindeer. Prancer the third reindeer and on the right in the second row is the most powerful reindeer. Vixen the fourth reindeer is beautiful, and also powerful like her companion Prancer. The fifth reindeer Comet brings wonder and happiness to children when Santa flies over everyone's houses. Cupid the sixth reindeer brings love and joy to children . Donner's name is actually Donder which means thunder in Dutch and German. Some have speculated that Moore named Donner (thunder) in reference to Thor, the Norse God of Thunder. Blitzen's name is derived from German Blitze that means lightning.
