12 Days of Christmas Poem |
The poems of Christmas have an appeal of their own .The theme or the subjects of these poems differ from each other. The 12 Days of Christmas Poem that was later made a part of the Christmas carols, was created as a coded reference to the important articles of Christian faith.
This poem or song was composed at a time when the Catholics were prohibited from practicing their faith.
The 12 days that is referred to in the poem 12 Days of Christmas Poem are the twelve days between the birth of Jesus Christ, (25th December), the Messiah who was sent from heaven to spread the message of God and the coming of the Magi (Epiphany, that is 6th January). The actual history of this poem still remains vague, but it is believed that is origin lies in the memory game that was played on Twelfth Night. The game was such that each of the players had to sing a verse in turn and each player would add a new gift when it came to their own verse the most important aspect of this game was that they had to remember all the earlier gifts as they sang their way through the list of presents. Anyone who forgot a gift would have to pay a forfeit to entertain everyone else. This poem for the first time got published in children's book named Mirth Without Mischief in the year 1780.
The three French versions of the song give rise to the conclusion that that his poem might be of French origin. Enjoy the 12 Days of Christmas Poem and the other poems of Christmas with Christmas Carnivals.
