Movie Review
This eighties version of the most often told of all Dickens' stories was filmed in Shrewsbury with George C Scott in the lead. He is so excellent in his portrayal of Scrooge that you tend to forget about anyone else in the movie – there is David Warner as Bob Cratchit, Edward Woodward as the jovial Ghost of Christmas Present, and Roger Rees as nephew Fred, but they are overshadowed (or underwritten). The one character who does get to stay in the memory is Jacob Marley (an extremely creepy performance by Frank Finlay).
Other versions of the tale – the musical 'Scrooge'; the 1950s version starring Alistair Sim – have concentrated on the lighter side of the tale to the detriment of Dickens' purpose and message. This version allows Scrooge to give as good as he gets and also leaves the bulk of the film extremely bleak, as it should be. (And it is much, much, better, than the recent television version starring Patrick Stewart).
Quotes
- Ebenezer: [looking at the Cratchit's feast] It's such a small bird.
- Ghost of Christmas Present: [leaning in Scrooge's face]: It's all Bob Cratchit can afford.
