Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol |
A classic of all times Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, ever since its publication to the
present times have had the same kind of appeal for readers belonging to various generations. It is probably because of this that it has been adapted in various forms for different media, like television, movie, radio and stage.

The main plot of the adaptation centers on Ebenezer Scrooge, who is rude and scrupulous moneylender, on whom even Christmas has no special significance. All he wants in life is profit. As the novel progresses, we find Scrooge being visited by Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. They all hold the mirror to his life past, the bleak life he is leading presently and the hollow existence he will have in future. The ultimate realization dons on him that nothing is more important than to enjoy and cherish the gift of life. There after, he vows to participate in the Christmas festivities as
his fellowmen. Though apparently the novel may appear to be meant for children, but beneath the simple story lies Dickens' earnest urge for human being to be generous and realize that a wider and a bigger world exists outside our narrow perview. We should realize that the essence of Christmas festivities is not to enjoy by fulfilling our individual wants and desires but to participate and celebrate in the happiness of others.
