Legend of Santa Claus |
Santa Claus emerged in the USA when Dutch settlers came to Manhattan on Christmas day 1624. In Holland, Sinterklaas (Santa Claus) wore a red robe while riding a white horse, and cared a bag of gifts to fill the children's stockings.
Christmas Carnivals is here with Legend of Santa Claus.
Dutch-American Saint Nick achieved his fully Americanized version in 1823 in the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas (by Clement Clarke Moore). Moore included the names of the reindeer; Santa Claus's laughs, winks, garments and nods; and the method by which Saint Nicholas, referred to as an elf, journeys back up the rooftop chimney. ("lays his finger aside of his nose" was drawn directly from Irving's 1809 description.)
St. Nicholas' evolution into today's happy, larger-than-life character is a wonderful example of the blending of countless practices around the world. He makes toys all year long assisted by his elves. On Christmas eve he dresses in his famous suit and black boots, climbs into his sleigh pulled by eight reindeer to begin gift giving to the good boys and girls of the world. Today he embodies all the goodness, charity and innocence of childhood.
It was not until the 1800s that the Santa as we know him today started to emerge. Creative minds like writers and artists depicted a lovable jolly fellow, small in size with a giving heart. On Christmas Eve he would ride a magnificent sleigh pulled by eight reindeer over the treetops and roofs. He dropped gifts down the chimneys of good boys and girls.
The arrival of Santa on Christmas Eve is the most anticipated event of the holiday season. He is recognized around the world as standing for love, caring, and gift giving throughout the season. Revel in the spirit of the season with Christmas Carnivals Legend of Santa Claus.
