Christmas Facts history traces out the facts and information behind the celebration of Christmas on 25th of December. In ancient times people from all over the world celebrated Winter Festivals. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia festival honoring Saturn –the god of Agriculture. Germanic pagans celebrated Yule or the return of Sun god. Many of the modern Christmas traditions such as bedecking houses and churches with tree branches, huge gifting and arranging grand feasts are apparently derived from these pagan celebrations
The records of Christmas Facts History states that Christmas was not celebrated during the first two centuries after Christ's birth. In 320 A.D Pope Julius formally selected December 25 as the birthday of Christ.
In 325 A.D Constantine, the first Christian Roman emperor officiated 25th December as the birth of Christ. But it was not recognized universally due to its non-christian origin. During the Cromwellian government(1645) Christmas was legally banned and any one found observing it was chastised. There was no feasting or decorating events and people were forced to work on this day. After the restoration of king Charles II in 1660 Christmas was reintroduced in England.
Christmas as we know now became widely popular in the 19th C. In 1834 Queen Victoria and her German husband Prince Albert endorsed the celebration of Christmas by introducing Christmas trees and carols. Christmas cards were introduced in Britain in 1840, with the postal service and penny stamps.
In America Christmas became well known in the 19th C Albama declared a legal holiday on the day of Christmas( 1836). The Santa Claus myth was popularized in America by the 1860s cartoonist Thomas Nast. He drew Santa as a round, bearded man dressed in a red suit.
