History of Christmas in France |
The festival of Christmas is celebrated worldwide not only by the Christians but also by others as well. The point that needs to be mentioned here is that the History of Christmas varies from place to place. Likewise the History of Christmas in France has a story to tell which is unlike any other story.
In France Christmas is known by the name of Noel. The word Noel derives its name from the French phrase ‘les bonnes nouvelles,' which means ‘the good news' and it also refers to the gospel. History of Christmas in France is related to the Romans as the customs associated with Christmas that originated in the 12th century in the Middle East
were introduced by the Romans to the people of France. History states that in 496 A.D, 3000 warriors along with their leader Clovis were baptized by Bishop Remi at Reims (a site located in France}. Therefore Reims is considered to be the place where Christmas was celebrated for the first time in France. It is said that the day of nativity was chosen by Bishop Remi to baptize the soldiers and Clovis.
The French people took some time to accept the customs related to the Christmas Festival and this is evident from the fact that the Christmas tree got introduced only in 1605 in Stratesburg (a city in France). The most important custom associated with France is that of the manger, which was made a part of the Christmas celebrations by the family of Saint Francis of Assassi between 1336 AD to 1334 AD in a place called Avignon. It was only in the 1960's that this custom gained popularity in France. Christmas Carnivals gives information on the History of Christmas in France.
