Christmas Holiday History is a wonderful story of the various Christmas Holiday Celebrations in different stages of civilization. In the early days of civilization (4th C B.C) i.e. during the Roman times Christmas Holiday occurred in honor of the Sun God Mithras.
Also named as Saturn, he was the savior God of the Roman soldiers. The Roman Holiday of Saturnalia started on Dec. 17th and continued till his birthday on the 25th of December. The Holiday Festivals were a grand merry-making accompanied with huge Gift Giving.
In 349A.D Pope Julius formally selected Dec.25 as the birthday of Jesus Christ. In a later phase of civilization Christmas Holiday was pursued to commemorate the birthday of Jesus Christ. The Virgin Mary held an integral part in this festival and the Feast of Nativity (440 A.D) took place at the time of Saturnalia Holiday.
The Holiday Activities during the pre Christmas period was first organized by Perpetuus Bishop of Tours in 490 A.D. To help his flock prepare for the Holiday he advocated fasting every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Martinmas (Nov.11) to Christmas Eve (Dec.24).
The Christmas Holiday History interprets the commercialization of Christmas during the Renaissance times (15th – early 20thC A.D). This is when people became much interested trade and commerce. The shopping spree increased during the Holiday Christmas generating 3/4ths of the annual profit.
Mass media like news and advertisements popularized Christmas in the 20th C A.D. These reflected greatly in the Christmas Holiday Celebrations. With the emergence of Pop-culture some popular pop music like "Jingle Bells" took place with the carols. The radio and the television broadcasted Family type dramas.
The 21st Century embraces Christmas with its revolutionary e-features. The Internet has facilitated people to send online gifts and greetings and lionize Christmas Holidays in a newfangled manner.
