Christmas is an occasion of merriment and happiness. During this festival, friend, relatives and family come together to enjoy this festival in the best possible manner. The History of Russian Christmas is related to the Russian Orthodox Church that celebrates its Christmas festival in accordance with the old Julian calendar. That is, it celebrates Christmas on 7th January, which is thirteen days after the Western Christmas.
This day that is 7th of January is regarded to be the day of solemn ritual as well as joyous celebration.
One of the customs linked to the History of Russian Christmas is that, the people dressed as manger animals made visits in groups to every house. While they made these visits, they also sang songs known as the kolyadki. Some of the kolyadki carols were related to the baby Christ while the other kolyadki's were sung to honor the ancient solar, Goddess Kolyadki. People offered these singers gold as well as coins. History states that in the 11th century Prince Vladimir in order to get baptized traveled to Constantinople, and he came back with the stories of miracles performed by St. Nicholas. Due to the communist revolution, the St. Nicholas feast, which took place on 6th December, got suppressed.
After the revolution of 1917 the people were forbidden from celebrating the festival of Christmas along with many other festivals.
